Each week the Sport section will be doing a feature on a different club across UWE to highlight our sporting achievements throughout the university. Therefore, who better to start with that last years ‘Club of the Year’:

Basketball collecting their ‘Team of the Year’ award at last year’s Sports Ball.

With a total of 45 members spanning across three teams; two men’s team and one women’s they have had a very successful couple of years.

The men’s first team had an outstanding season 2015 – 16 winning their league Western 1A and thus getting a promotion to this year playing in the Premier Division. They also got through to the final of the National Trophy taking on Newcastle in Sheffield and unfortunately missing out on the trophy 78 – 55. After getting their first victory last Wednesday against Bath Basketball coming back with a 70 – 64 win, they currently sit in 5th place just three points behind Brunel.

The Men’s second team had an up and down season which resulted in them finishing third in Western 3A division. They currently sit in 5th place 3 points behind Exeter seconds who they play next Wednesday.

The women’s team also had a very respectable season having been promoted in 2014-2015 into Western 1A, they finished fourth in their league and will hope to continue the success of the men’s 1st team in getting promoted into the Premier Division in the upcoming seasons. They currently sit in fifth position with vital must win games coming up.

Not only have the teams had a respectable team performance they also have Stefanos Fasianos who plays professionally for Bristol Flyers as guard in the BBL. Being a strong shooter and specialising in three pointers, Fasinos is an exciting player for both UWE and Bristol Flyers.

Check out Basketball in action with men’s first team playing at the centre of sport next Wednesday the 16th at 1pm. Whilst the men’s second team take on the University of Exeter at 3pm also at Centre for Sport. Finishing with the women’s team playing Southampton Solent at 5pm. All the games promise to be an important game after having a difficult start to their 2016 – 17 season.
