Group A saw an opening clash between two of the tournament favourites Australia and England go head to head with Australia being victorious with Australian halfback Johnathan Thurston scoring 4 goals and getting a try himself. Australia secured their spot at the top of Group A with a win over Fiji. England clung onto second place with a huge win over Ireland, who slump to the bottom of the group after this loss and their opening defeat to Fiji.

Group B saw New Zealand made their mark with two scores of more than 40 points each over France and Samoa and are in a dominant position at the top of the group. The French team are in second place despite having only scored 9 points this tournament in their one win over Papua New Guinea

Italy is sat atop of Group C with an impressive win over Italy in Cardiff, but Scotland are close behind them after their win over Tonga.

There was some history made when the USA made their World Cup debut with an exciting win over the Cook Islands at the Memorial Stadium here in Bristol, thus placing them at the top of Group D.
