> UWE team overcomes exeter challenge to face countries best in Sheffield.

UWE Tennis mens firsts made their way through to the final of the BUCS Trophy with a hard fought win over the University of Exeter 2nds.

Both teams were expecting a close match as the last fixture between the two teams ended in a 6-6 draw, but on this occasion it was UWE who came through the stronger running out 8-4 winners and securing their place at the 2011 BUCS Championships in Sheffield.

The Exeter team seemed to get off to a quicker start in the doubles fixtures as the top pairing of Ben Calnan and Ben West struggled to hold onto their serve. A pivotal service hold from West put UWE into the lead for the first time at 5-4, and from their the match became a simpler affair, ending 6-4, 6-2. Dan Mock and George Tripp looked like they might have had their season long unbeaten streak broken as they were taken into a third set tiebreak, but they came through winning 7-6, 3-6, 10-4.

With UWE 4-0 up going into the singles, and top seen Calnan easing through his singles, things were looking good. Despite Tripp losing out at number 4, UWE’s place in the final was booked when West won a highly competitive match 6-4, 6-2. The only rubber left to be decided was second seed Mocks match, which had lasted the duration of Calnan and Wests matches combined. The 3 hour thriller exhibited some quality tennis and provided excellent entertainment for the enthusiastic and patriotic Exeter crowd. With the tie wrapped up, Mock eventually succumbed to fatigue and the will of the home sides support, losing 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.
