It is good to see that Nelly Furtado has decided to collaborate with someone other than Timberland as she teams up with James Morrison for his ballad Broken Strings. Although they seem a little bit of an odd couple for a song, surprisingly their vocals work quite well together. If anything Morrison does sound the better of the two, with his distinctive, raw, unique style highlighting his talent as a singer and guitarist.
Broken Strings comes off his new album Songs for You, Truths for Me, described by himself as “less playful, more to the point” than his former album Undiscovered. I do not know if he has really stretched himself with Broken Strings however. By the end of the song you are not dying to play it again and it won’t be easily remembered as a great duet.
However Morrison’s music is definitely something to chill to on a Sunday morning after a heavy Saturday night and his new album is a welcome return amongst the recent swarm of sub standard indie bands.
He has just kicked off his latest tour which arrives at the Colston Hall next March. Do hurry if you would like tickets as many gigs have sold out elsewhere.
Broken Strings is available from the 8th November.
