The month of December has finally approached us. This can only mean one thing, Christmas is just around the corner. Christmas for most of us is one of the most busy social times of the year with our event calendars almost fully booked each weekend in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Work parties, sports Christmas balls, secret Santa meals, returning home and partying with our friends, the much anticipated New Years Eve; whatever it is you are doing this December, you will be guaranteed to require a glamorous Christmas outfit at some point.

This December there is much to work with in terms of putting together a ‘party’ outfit. With budgets also being tight, as always a drawback from being a student, it is important that you nail your Christmas outfit first time.

My advice would be to start looking early. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been running around on party day looking for something to wear, and then you end up settling for an ‘okay’ outfit because you didn’t have the time.

We all love a bit of sparkle and Christmas is the perfect time to glam up your outfits. This season we are spoilt for choice will metallics, glitter, sequins, baroque, all being popular trends, and the trends are taking over every single aspect of our outfits. You will be finding sequin hairbands, and clutches, as well as dresses, so choose carefully where you want to show off that trend. There is such thing as too much sequins (unfortunately)!

Although shoes always have been just as important as the outfit, this season this is even more so. We are incredibly spoilt for choice with shoes this year with so many different cutting edge styles around; each shoe having a personality of its own.

Christmas is the time of year your ‘patent’ shoes come out the closet. This year however, its you boys that are going to show the girls how its done. The patent leather dress shoe is a high contender to be your number one formal shoe. With the recent release of Skyfall, I’m sure we can expect to see many James Bond wannabes showcasing a plush suit, and a pair of patent Brogues. Ooooosh!

I know a lot of guys who want to go for the sophisticated smart look but aren’t so keen on the dressed up tagline. For your less formal Christmas events, a dress sneaker will look the part. Dress up your jeans, or tone down your suit to get the ‘smart/casual’ dress code down to a tee.
The AW12 British Heritage trend is still going strong through the Christmas months, and the Brogues can be a suiting statement piece to complete your outfit. The designs this year are fresh and versatile, and will accompany any Christmas party outfit. Sequins, chunky platforms, woven, studded – you name it, and they have designed it.

The most important thing on your tick list for finding the perfect shoe to complete your outfit is practicality. The winter brings cold and wet nights, which can result in a slippery pavement; not a good accompaniment for a large stiletto heel. Originating from the Victorian Era, Chelsea boots were a popular contender for winter last year; one year on they are even hotter. If you want to play it safe and stay on your feet throughout the night a low flat heeled, almond toe Chelsea boot is a cool and casual option. However the Chelsea boot is not a limited option. Much detail has been added to this simple design to give it some edge. Metal toe caps, glitter, animal print, and a heel are all ways to convert this shoe from daytime to night.

If you are looking for somewhere else to showcase a statement piece, the neckline is hosting the party this year. Peter pan collars have been around all year with soft blouses, but this winter they have been glammed up. We are seeing many plain and simple dresses with a detailed collar which adds a touch of that subtle sparkle to your outfit without going over the top. We are also seeing big ‘add on’ collars from shops like Topshop which can be added to any outfit.

With so many styles to chose from you will have no difficulty looking glamorous this Christmas. Let the festivities commence!!
