B Block Occupation; The Bigger Picture….

Hannah Palmer

UWE is not the only university, or the first, to be occupied by students adamant on forcing their university to join them in solidarity with Gaza. The University of East London, St Andrews in Scotland, Bryan Shaw, part of St Martins, and UWE, were all in occupation yesterday. Reports of American universities are also coming in as students across the West get political.

Vice Chancellor, Alan Gilbert was yesterdat still refusing to negotiate at Manchester University where students were occupying the John Owen's Building for the 15th day.

At the University of East Anglia where the occupation came to an end, management kept its word and negotiations have begin over the occupiers' demands.

Student occupiers of The University of East London (who are now in talks with their university management) yesterday reported, “We have had an encouraging wave of support, not only from UEL students and lecturers, but also from members of the Stop the War Society and other universities that have been or still are under occupation for the same cause.”  Students at UEL, like UWE occupiers, took over a key lecture theatre to show films and hold discussions.

Both

St Andrews University and Byam Shaw People’s University have been in occupation since Wednesday 18th February.

Occupying students at Manchester University set up their own Facebook site. After 15 days of occupation, a spokesperson on the site commented on lagging food supplies and asked supporters to donate their cupboard supplies to their hungry cause.

At Manchester tensions reported seem higher than most. Manchester occupants spoke of security intimidation tactics, and slander;

“The apologists for Israel have demanded of the University that we have their security in this meeting. They say there will be anti Semitic speeches happening. This is clearly untrue, and is an attempt to intimidate student activism on campus. Lets make sure that we get as many people as possible to come and hear a passionate pro Palestinain speaker and say that anti-zionism is hear to stay!”

Other universities being occupied or expereinceing protests include, Birmingham, SOAS, Warwick, Sussex, Strathclyde, Sheffield Hallam, Queen Mary Occupation, Oxford Occupation, Nottingham Occupation,Leeds Occupation, Kings College Occupation, Cambridge Occupation and the list could  go on.

With other university occupiers having held their posts at such lengths, despite feeling intimidated, it is clear were the UWE group has gathered inspiration from. Yesterday morning UWE occupiers commented that talks already going on at other universities show that their own demands are not “pie in the sky.” It is said that Vice Chancellor, Steve West will be engaging in talks with UWE occupiers today, Westerneye will keep you up to date.
