Amongst people from all over UK, around 50 people from Bristol attended the protest. This act of solidarity signified the nation-wide opposition to fracking.
The amount of support shown at this demonstration “have merely strengthened the resolve of our communities to continue in our opposition to extreme energy technologies being utilised here or anywhere,” said A Frack Free Dee Coalition spokesperson to reporters.
The protest was announced in response to local campaigners’ eviction from a test drilling site for an exploratory unconventional gas well, which is due to sample both the coal bed, and the much deeper Bowland shale gas.
According to the protesters, fracking can cause water contamination, air pollution, earthquakes and other environmental problems.
However, some claim it will instead provide jobs and reduce UK’s reliance on imported gas. The site in Upton is just one of many proposed locations for Fracking. The nearest potential site to Bristol is in Weston Super Mare and across the River Severn in the Forest of Dean.
Should testing go ahead, Bristol could suffer the consequences.
